These homemade soft oreo cookies are a favorite at my house! They bring all the classic flavors of an oreo in soft and gooey perfection! Easy to make and even easier to enjoy!
The secret to an oreo’s dark color and signature flavor is the use of black cocoa powder! These cookies can be made with any form of cocoa powder but if you want that signature color and flavor then black cocoa powder is how you get it.
Black cocoa powder has a more aggressive flavor to it than regular cocoa powder! It’s not a straightforward chocolate flavor and doesn’t have the same roundness to it like other cocoa powders do, in fact, it’s a little more intense and hits the palette right out of the gate. This comes from the alkalization process that is used to make the cocoa powder black.
If you have ever eaten and oreo, cookies and cream ice cream or a candy bar with chocolate cookies pieces in it, then you have noticed this flavor, but you probably didn’t put your finger on that signature flavor coming from the black cocoa powder.
The intensity and boldness from this flavor make it a perfect counterbalance to a richly sweet and thick center frosting or in the case of ice cream, the rich vanilla base compliments it beautifully. These cookies beg for a glass of milk to further complete the experience and balance out the richness.
For the center frosting, a little goes a long way, I recommend smoothly frosting the bottom of one cookie and then sandwiching them together, don’t make the frosting too thick in the center, it’s all about balance with this cookie. Of course, this is personal preference and based on my how my kids like these. You can test it out and see what fits your fancy.
I have four kids, and during pregnancy I always went through an oreo phase about a month before they were born, I could pound a whole package in a day or two if left to my own devices. Who knows if that is why my kids love them so much today but I they do love them. These soft versions of the classic cookie are no exception. Luckily, this recipe is quick and easy to make!
