Cake Mix Oreos

These cake mix Oreos are delicious, super easy to make and are always a household favorite at my house! They seriously always disappear quickly and I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like them. Bold statement – I know – and I am sure the cake mix Oreo haters are out there but all my peeps in my life love them.

I first tried these about 12 years ago when I worked for a law firm and a co-worker of mine used to make them and bring them in. I loved them and made some for my husband and he has never forgotten them and asks me to make them a lot. Pre-pandemic he always wanted me to make them for a treat to bring into work.

For the batch in this picture I made a smaller Oreos, so the tops are not as crackled as the larger cookies.

I just finished teaching a little zoom class last night on how to make these with some girls and ladies from my church and it was so fun to see everyone whip out a batch of their own! These are also a fun and easy treat to make with kids. My daughter loves to help roll the dough balls and my other kids love to help frost and sandwich them.

The filling for these cake mix Oreos is a vanilla buttercream that is thicker than normal buttercream. It’s just sweet enough and the butteriness and sweetness balances with the chocolate cookies. You can get creative with the frosting for the center of these cookies by adding different flavorings like mint, cherry, strawberry, chocolate, orange, raspberry, etc. or add some sprinkles to make them look extra cute or you can add cream cheese to the frosting too for a cream cheese frosting or add some marshmallow crème for a lighter frosting experience.

  4. Place 15 cookie dough balls on each cookie sheet, these don’t spread a lot so 15 on a sheet will be fine.
  5. Use you palm to press these down into little discs.
  6. Bake for 7-8 minutes or until the tops look cooked and they will probably have a little cracking on the tops.
  7. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes so they don’t break apart.
  8. Move to a cooling wrack and let them cool completely before adding the frosting.
  9. Make the frosting my adding all ingredients together and blending until smooth, adding a little more milk or water if frosting is too thick.
  10. Use a spoon, butter knife or rubber spatula to frost the backside of the cookie and then place another cookie on top to make a Oreo sandwich cookie.
