Ham and Pea Gravy Over Egg Noodles

I grew up with the flavors from this ham and pea gravy over egg noodles dish however, my parents served the ham and pea gravy over toast. It was one of my favorite meals as a kid. It filled me to the brim with delicious and homey, comforting flavors.

When I make this dish so many nostalgic memories come rushing back to me, I swear I can hear my busy house with 9 kids and 2 parents all rushing to get dinner on the table. We all helped growing up, if you didn’t help then “you didn’t eat” (even though my parents always fed us and never let us go without eating but the fear of missing a meal was a good incentive to help out), the kitchen and meal time were major parts of my growing up experiences and a big part of why I cook today, it brings connection.

So this dish is lighter version of that classic recipe and it’s totally delectable. It’s also super easy to make and honestly takes about 15-20 minutes from prep to finish. It also takes minimal ingredients.

What you need to make ham and pea gravy over egg noodles:

Serves 4

  • 6 ounces egg noodles – half a standard sized bag
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup onions – finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt + more to taste
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoons black pepper – this depend how much you like in your dishes, I like a lot so I all 1/2 teaspoon plus more on top of my portion
  • 1 cup ham – diced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • Parmesan cheese for on top

Ingredients

  1. Salt water and cook pasta.
  2. While pasta is cooking, add olive oil to a non-stick pan and add onions.
  3. Cook onions until they start to soften and get golden.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the onions and oil and stir.
  5. Add milk and mix well into the onions and oil mixture.
  6. Add salt, black pepper, ham and frozen peas and stir until peas are cooked through and sauce starts to thicken slightly.
  7. Drain your noodles and add gravy on top of them then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and I add fresh cracked black pepper too but that is optional.
