Biscuits

I believe everyone needs a good biscuits recipe in their cooking repertoire and this recipe should be your go-to biscuit recipe! It is simple to make and yet so delicious with beautiful flaky but still moist layers! These biscuits are easy to pulled together with basic ingredients most people have in their pantry. These are fluffy and light with soft and buttery layers, The baking powder taste is perfectly balanced and not overpowering at all. Seriously they are so good!

These biscuits are great on their own and do split perfectly in the center! I like them with butter and jam, used in biscuits and gravy or breakfast sandwiches or whatever you can think of! Because they come together to quickly they are perfect for fast dinners or meals too.

The trick to these biscuit’s layers is the use of cold butter, you want things cold and you do not want to over work your dough! The cold butter will melt in the cooking process while the baking powder does it’s thing to raise the dough thus making beautiful layers that will allow you to easily split the biscuit in half.

What you need to make biscuits:

15 biscuits

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup cold salted butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • Optional – 1 tablespoon milk or cream to brush on tops for golden color on top.

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat oven to 375 F.
  2. In a bowl add flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and mix well.
  3. Cut cold butter into chunks and add to flour and mix with hands or a pastry cutter into flour until you have pea sized butter chunks.
  4. Mix milk and vinegar together and let sit for 1 minute then add to the flour and butter mixture and stir until a dough forms. The less you mix this dough the better your layers will be.
  5. Flour a surface and roll dough out to about 3/4 to 1 inch thickness and use a round cookie cutter to make round biscuits.
  6. Place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and brush tops with milk or cream for a golden top.
  7. Bake for ~ 9-12 minutes or until biscuits are risen and look baked, don’t over bake.
  8. Enjoy!
