Cinnamon Ham Glaze
I love this cinnamon glaze on top of ham, it makes the salty flavors sing and it’s easy to make!
When I am picking a ham to bake, I prefer an uncut ham to a pre-sliced one for only one reason, it does not dry out as much during the baking or reheating process. The meat is usually still moist and juicy when baked then allowed to rest and sliced into. The only draw back is that most hams that are not pre-sliced usually do not come with any sort of glaze or seasoning. So I created this recipe to get the best of both worlds, yummy flavor and no dry ham! This glaze is made on a stove top and pored onto your ham the last 20- 30 minutes of baking and I reserve a little bit of the glaze to pour over the slices when it’s on the serving platter.
Notes for cooking your ham. Bake 15 minutes per pound at 325 F. and cover the ham with aluminum foil, place bone or cut part down on the pan. Remove the foil the last 20-30 minutes and add 3/4th of the glaze on the top and sides of ham. After cooking, allow the ham to rest for 15 minutes before slicing and then pour the remaining glaze over the ham once it’s sliced.
What you need
Makes enough for a 8-9 pound ham – bone in
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup water
Dash of cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ginger
2 tablespoon corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons soy sauce
Instructions
In a sauce pan, add sugar, water, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, ginger, corn syrup, salt and soy sauce and bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer and simmer until the mixture thickens slightly and resembles a syrup. If you are familiar with candy making stages you want this to be at a thread stage.
Pour 3/4ths of the glaze on top of your ham during the last 20-30 minutes of baking. Once the ham cools slightly (about 15 minutes) and is sliced, pour the remaining glaze over the slices.
